Video won't record
Recording video over the web requires a modern PC or Mac, and an internet connection with enough open capacity to transfer a high resolution video.
Minimum Recommended System Requirements:
- A desktop computer or laptop with at least a dual-core CPU. Mobile devices such as tablets or phones are not supported.
- 2 Gigabytes free RAM
- Available network bandwidth of 32 Mbps (4 megabytes per second)
- If other devices are using your internet connection, this will reduce your available bandwidth.
- You can check your network speed by visiting https://fast.com
- Video recording will not work if you are connected to a VPN.
- Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Microsoft Edge.
- Make sure your browser is up to date.
- You may be able to record using Apple's Safari browser, however it is not fully supported at this time.
- Internet Explorer is no longer being actively developed by Microsoft. Please use a different web browser.
- A webcam with microphone built-in, if including camera video and audio.
Video is blank
When I record video, there is no video image.
- Does your web browser have permission to access your camera and microphone?
- Google Chrome: Change your camera and microphone permissions
- Microsoft Edge: Windows camera, microphone, and privacy
- Firefox: Manage your camera and microphone permissions
- The articles linked above are maintained by the browser developers and are subject to change at any time.
- You may be able to record using Apple's Safari browser, however it is not fully supported at this time.
- Try opening your submission in a different web browser and see if the recording software works for you there.
- For example: if you are using Google Chrome, try Microsoft Edge or Firefox.
- While we test CATALYST in all major web browsers, your preferred browser's security settings or installed plug-ins could be interfering with recording.
Video shows an infinite image
While recording my video, the recording shows repeating windows inside each other, similar to this:
This happens when the recording software is being directed to record itself, which in turn is recording itself, and so on and on.
- Record a window instead of your full screen.
- When the recording software prompts you to select what to record, select the window of your presentation rather than your entire screen.
- To show a PowerPoint in a window: Go to the Slide Show tab, then click Set Up Slide Show. In the dialog window that opens, select Browsed by an individual (window). Click OK. When you start your presentation, it will now display in a window you can select in the recording software.
- Apple Keynote does not yet have a windowed mode.
- Record web content in a different browser than the recording software.
- If your presentation is hosted in a web browser, or if you need to open a browser page and show web content as part of your presentation, use a completely different browser than the recording software is using. For example: if you are recording using Google Chrome, open your web content in Firefox or Microsoft Edge.
Video won't play back in browser
I uploaded my own video successfully, but it won't play back in the browser.
- Keep the file name of your video short and simple.
- The filename should only contain letters (A-Z, a-z), numbers (0-9), or underscores (_), and be shorter than 100 characters.
- Special characters in the filename could interfere with your browser's ability to play the video.
- Videos must be in MP4 format, and use the H.264 encoder.
- Because your audience may be using older operating systems or browsers, we do not support playback of MP4s using HEVC/H.265 encoding at this time.
- Although the MP4 format supports it, we do not recommend using MPEG-2 or MPEG-1 encoding.
